Typhoons Outward Bound | Richard Taylor
In the months following D-Day, Hawker’s formidable, snub-nosed Typhoon became a nightmare for German forces in Normandy. Elite Panzer units crumbled under relentless barrages of rockets and bombs. Several times a day, Typhoon pilots braved the hazards of flak and ground fire, crossing the Channel to deliver their devastating payloads.
On this fine summer morning, Typhoon Mk1b aircraft from 247 Squadron race toward the Normandy frontlines, embarking on the first of many missions that day. Flying at mast-top height, the Typhoons skim past two weathered steam drifters, repurposed for wartime patrols of the Channel and ready to rescue any downed airmen in need.
