Return of The Hunters | Anthony Saunders
Throughout the early morning of 6 June 1944, men of the US 29th Infantry Division had fought their way yard by yard across the bloody shingle of Omaha Beach. The strong German opposition was unexpected but, showing unparalleled levels of bravery and determination, the US infantrymen finally prevailed and within days the scene on the beach was that of activity as ‘Mulberry A’ was erected off this once-deadly beach.
As men and materiel pour ashore from the recently installed, prefabricated ‘Mulberry Harbour A’ at Omaha Beach, a pair of RAF Mk.Ib Typhoons from 245 Squadron race back towards their base at Holmesley South in Hampshire, to re-fuel and re-arm. The Typhoon pilots have just delivered a devastating rocket attack on German positions behind the Normandy beachhead. A few days later a violent storm would devastate the harbour below.
