A striking tribute to the legendary McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, heavily used by the USAF and USN in Vietnam. In September 1966, WWII ace Colonel Robin Olds took command of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at Ubon, Thailand, amid an escalating war. Despite experienced pilots, morale was low—until Olds’ leadership quickly transformed the unit.
Flying the formidable F-4C Phantom II, Olds led his squadron into some of the war’s most intense battles. On May 20, 1967, depicted in Anthony Saunders’ MiG Encounter, Olds and his flight of eight Phantoms engaged North Vietnamese MiG-17s, downing two and securing his third and fourth air victories. By the time Olds left command, the ‘Wolfpack’ had become the USAF’s top MiG-killing wing. With 152 combat missions and 17 total aerial victories, he cemented his legacy as a triple ace.
