Summer 1940: The veteran pilots of JG-26 Schlageter face another grueling day. Once more, they launch from their base at Abbeville in northern France, tasked with escorting the Luftwaffe’s massed bombers targeting RAF fighter airfields in southern England. And once more, they find themselves locked in fierce dogfights against the Spitfires and Hurricanes of RAF Fighter Command. The Battle of Britain is nearing its decisive peak, and for the first time, the Luftwaffe encounters the sting of defeat.
This vivid account captures a typical scene from those relentless aerial battles. A Me109 from JG-26, damaged during combat, struggles with an overheating engine, trailing smoke as it limps away. But the squadron's legendary commander, Adolf Galland, moves in to guide the wounded fighter safely back across the Channel.
