The daring raid on Tokyo, led by Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle on April 18, 1942, remains one of WWII’s most audacious operations. Launching 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers from the USS Hornet’s cramped, heaving deck, Doolittle and his crews embarked on a one-way mission to bomb industrial targets in Tokyo and disrupt Japanese war production. Their goal was to sow doubt in enemy minds and divert resources to homeland defense, which they achieved. The raid also served to uplift American morale after Pearl Harbor, proving the nation’s resolve. Doolittle’s leadership and the crew’s courage inspired a belief that victory, though costly, was within reach.
Anthony’s commemorative painting captures the moment Doolittle’s B-25 lifts off the Hornet’s rain-soaked deck, leading his squadron into history.
