On December 23, 1941, a Dornier 24 flying boat of the Royal Netherlands Navy spotted the Japanese invasion fleet near Kuching, British Borneo. By coincidence, the aircraft also observed the Dutch submarine K-XIV patrolling on the surface, unaware of the nearby enemy forces. The pilot signaled the submarine with the message, “Enemy to the northeast.” Acting swiftly, the K-XIV launched an attack, sinking two ships and damaging two others, marking one of the first Allied victories against the Japanese in World War II.
The Signatures: Every print in the limited edition has been exclusively signed by Dutch veterans from World War II, including TWO of the Flying Boat's aircrew plus THREE crew members from K XIV - all personally involved in the 'Chance Encounter.'
